Starting in Cornwall this Sunday 5th September, Alex (rider number 166) is one to watch after his brilliant professional race win in the recent Ryedale GP. Cycling club and local restaurant team up to fund new bikes for refugee riders

Cycling Club Hackney and Venerdi restaurant have worked in tandem to kit out local refugee riders with new, high-quality racing bikes.
The move is part of the club’s Aspiring Rider Development Programme (ARDP), which helps its young cyclists compete at the highest level.
The scheme includes a group of refugees who have been riding with the club for over a year, as well as other youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds.
The club made the announcement as it launched its new bikes and kit outside Venerdi, a popular Italian restaurant on Chatsworth Road, earlier this month.
Cycling Club Hackney’s manager and lead coach Keir Apperley said: “We feel that we are at the cutting edge for positive change that leads towards increased BAME participation in cycling.
“ARDP is about setting up an environment that is attractive to sports cyclists from all backgrounds and circumstances.
“I believe that this project will create a sense of belief that we can make the difference and effect change for young riders who would otherwise think cycling as a sport is not for them.”

Apperley has worked in grassroots cycling for over 10 years, coaching the likes of Tao Geoghegan-Hart and Alex Peters, both Hackney riders who have gone on to ride for Team Sky.
Geoghegan-Hart, 24, yesterday celebrated his first professional victory in the opening stage of the Tour of the Alps in Austria, as part of a team that includes four-time Tour de France winner Chris Froome.
Apperley added: “Our riders need to know that there are possibilities to go to the next levels and even all the way to the top, breaking through any false ceilings there may be along the way.
“ARDP staff and coaches are on hand to help them develop their confidence, language and communication skills.”
Haben Gebrehiwet, who came to the UK from Eritrea, says his new bike is transformative: “It means a lot to me. I want to say thank you to the sponsorship project, to Venerdi and to Keir as well, for all the hard work.
“With this new bike, I will try to race in long races, more than 100 kilometres. I wish one day to be a professional cyclist with their help.”
Fellow ARDP member Okubit Tereke, also from Eritrea, received a race bike too.
Both bikes have been rebranded with Venerdi logos, after the restaurant got involved to help finance the purchases and resprays.
Cycling Club Hackney is now hoping to start an ARDP refugee cycling team.
If you want to get involved in the club, Apperley runs outreach sessions on Wednesdays and Saturdays at Kingsmead Housing Estate, as part of the Concorde Bike Club.
The club is also running a Spring series of races at Lee Valley Velopark – the next is on 27 April, followed by one on 8 June.
It is also preparing for its 12th annual ‘big ride out’ on Sunday 5 May.
Former club member Alex Peters came back to racing with an impressive Hog Hill win in the Elite race last week. Great news for private member Alex, back in action again. Also a decent 3rd place for David Newbiggin in the supporting race there - well done both.

CC Hackney original youth member Tao Geoghegan Hart really has grown up. On Monday 22nd April 2019 he won his first professional World Tour bike race; beating some of the best riders on the planet to take stage one in the Tour of the Alps. He's certainly come a long way, his drive and enthusiasm is still there - keep it coming Tao! Well done and congratulations from all at CC Hackney.

Alex Peters and Tao Geoghegan Hart set alight the British National Road Race Championships. Wow our boys made the race - I saw it live with my eys,. The way they rode was incredible a top class double act doing the bizzo and taking it to the best riders in Britain. Tao (Mr T) is now the 2016 National Under 23 British Champion. It was a race within a race; Team Tinkov's Adam Blythe won the Elite title. A great event to watch, the real deal.
Alex has been renamed Durracell Bunny Peters by Cycle Sport mag and awarded him man of the match for his efforts out front all day.

Alex Peters and Tao Geoghagan Hart have professional contracts for the world beating, World Tour Team Sky. Alex has signed a two year contract from 2016. His first race in Sky kit will be the Ride London-Surrey Classic taking place this Sunday 2nd August.
This is CC Hackney calling on all of Hackney's cycling fans to come down town to support and cheer Alex on during his big day on home ground - at the next level. Tao's races will be up in due course, get ready!
Ever since the 110kmtraining rides and the educational trips we used to do (when Alex and Tao were growing at CCH) it's been steady but dedicated little steps all the way, for both of them.
Earlier today Alex underwent surgery in the Netherlands (the home of SEG Racing) after he was involved in a big crash at the end of stage 2 of the #Oberosterreich Rundfahrt race in Austria last Friday. I'm told the operation to pin his right collar bone went well and that soon he will begin static training while he recovers back home in Hackney. Alex will now miss the National RR Championships next weekend and also the Giro Aosta Valley Mont Blanc (14-19th July) but he will return to racing late on in July.
Never mind that's racing as they say. On the other hand there will be very positive and exciting news regarding our lad before he rides again - watch this space - extra! extra! Of course all at CC Hackney wish Alex a speedy return to what he does best; riding a bike to anywhere fast:)
Bad luck for Alex Peters in #Oberosterreich Rundfahrt.
He is out of the race with a broken collarbone. He was involved in the
massive crash in stage 2. Last night he underwent research in the local
hospital. Surgery will take place in Sportmáx Sportmedisch Centrum - Performance Centre as soon as possible.
We will get back soon on his recovery. He will be back in July!
SEG Racing: Yesterday the guys did everything to move up in GC, all or nothing! Alex Peters attacked with 40km to go. Till last km it was all.. Good try Alex is still 7th in GC, 2nd in Young Rider GC and 3rd in Mountain classification. Today final stage, go guys! #TourdeBretagne
Tuesday 28th April 2015 CC Hackney off-spring Alex Peters is the Tour de Bretagne stage 4 winner. This tough seven day race in France's hot bed of cycling is prestigious and highly rated among professional riders; well done Alex 'the dramatic' Peters! Starting tomorrow in the red jersey as best young rider and 4th on GC (19' from the race leader Anthony Delaplace) Alex and his team mates at SEG Racing will be looking at how to crack the opposition as the race reaches it's critical stages. Others are in the way of a 1st place on GC and more prizes along the way for the scary one from Hackney.

Stage 5 in the red jersey of leading young rider - Alex Peters
The biggest win of Alex Peters's career to date was not to be. This despite his finishing in the same time as the winner but loosing out to the time bonus system. On the penultimate Stage the whole Tour de Normandie field was broken in the end by our lad from Stokie and his crazed drive for a solid overall lead. It was only a slip-up in the final run-in where just 500m from the line Peters hit something and went to ground. Getting up and to the line he lost the 45 seconds advantage he had established by attacking and destroying all of his GC opponents (and their teams) in heavy rain in the last half of the stage.

Davy Gunst who was with them rode as hard as he could to get me into yellow, after his sacrificial effort I had to do it on
my own" This audacious act was not on the menu; Peters dishing out high stakes, risk all pain was a fresh approach for this race. By the finish SEG staff, race officials, riders and followers were impressed by something special in road racing they had been witnessing. There was no such thing as sitting and waiting for Alex 'the dramatic' Peters.

Taking the yellow leaders jersey to wear during the last stage (by virtue of finishing points but in the same time as Dimitri Clayes) was some consolation. Alex needed to cross the line ahead of his Belgian adversary on the last stage to Caen. He and SEG Racing did all they could but it was not enough to prevent those unreal bonus seconds coming into play.
Being on the the last stage podium for two reasons; as best young rider (the white jersey winner) and runner up overall, Alex was left to reflect on how close he had got to top step time. Second hurts, he may have preferred third place as not being too close to No.1 is easier to live with.

Alex's next stage races are; Tour de Bretagne 25th April - 1st May (Blaireau campagne) and **Ronde de I'Isard 21st - 24th May (Pyrenean high mountains) **Keep an eye out for this one as CC Hackney are looking for more supporters to head down for this.
