5th Round Chelmsford - a grand day out

Well done to the 40 plus riders who brave the chilly wet weather to take part on Sunday in CCH's 5th Round Chelmsford ride . This years ride was a  memorial to CCH member Claire Tansley who died earlier this year after a long battle with cancer  - her husband Harry led the 40+ peloton out from the Lea Valley ice rink up to High Beech where the size of the group drew admiring responses from other clubs riders.

 At that point we split into three groups a fast group that whizzed off quickly to Chelmsford, a medium paced group following them up and a larger group including many CCH youth riders that did a shorter loop - around 65 miles up to the Hatfield area and back. This was due to the usual bank holiday train engineering works meaning the bailout at Bicknacre was not on. Harry was persuaded  to ride the whole thing despite having not done much riding recently and only really seemed to be suffering when the rain got heavier whilst he digested the large lunch we had at the White Swan. We had hoped to meet up with the faster group there but a misleading R instead of the correct L on the route sheet added an extra ten miles - and after much scratching of the head wondering where it had all gone wrong - this meant we just missed them. Well done to Patrick for beating us up North Hill - perhaps it was all part of a cunning plan... We were joined there by Gary who without his usual alarm call started off at ten and came the direct route to catch us.

The rain came on a bit heavier after lunch - no doubt us riders were a bit heavier too - but after a stop for some Eccles cakes - good call Gary - we sped on in back to London enjoying the ever so tasteful Manor Road at Chigwell Row.

5th Round Chelmsford - Claire Tansley Memorial Ride

CCH's 5th Round Chelmsford ride will take place next Sunday 6th of May. from The Lea Valley Ice Rink on Lea Bridge Road at 8.30am and takes in 160km of wonderful countryside out round Chelmsford and back, stopping for lunch at the White Swan in Bicknacre. If you don't want to ride the whole distance you can get easily into Chelmsford from there and catch the train back. The route sheet and bailout routes are available for download here.

Last year we had lovely weather and around thirty riders rode the whole distance with another twenty or so doing a shortened version - lets get more out there this year and hope the rain dries up....

The 15th CCH annual Ronde Chelmsford 2022 (Meet 8am at Lea valley Ice Centre Lea Bridge Road Sunday 26th June depart 8.30) The CCH Ronde C is an open social ride for experienced cyclists. The distance is about 90 miles/150km - please feel welcome to join us, riding for our outreach community projects, diversity and cycle sport for all. The 'Round Chelmsford'

6th April 2008

The Round Chelmsford is the inaugural ride of the newly formed "Cycle Club Hackney".

The CCH has been formed to promote cycling and cycle sport in East London, especially for youth. It has already developed ties with Hackney Youth Services and Hackney Learning Trust, with the aim of providing sporting opportunities to everybody in Hackney. The club is open to anybody, regardless of age or geographical location.

Cycling is a sport that anyone can participate at their own level. The "Round Chelmsford" is a sociable, non-competitive ride that any regular rider should be able to achieve, the distance is around 88 miles; there are some hills!

Club Run Reports...

Welcome to the club Freyer our youngest rider yet.
This week a group of eight set off and stayed together until our cafe stop in Blackmore. On the way we came across the route of the Hainault Hilly TT and watched some of the riders pass. Stuart was inspired and even gave chase... After Blackmore we divided into those heading straight back (John, Oliver, Nikki, Stuart & Freyer) leaving Dave, Boris and I to do a bit more. We travelled through the Easters to High Roding and back round to White Roding and then home via Moreton and Toot Hill.
The day was notable for it's startling cloud formations of many kinds, I'm sure it was a weather persons dream day on all fronts.
The light was vivid, highlighting the hints of spring green in the young sprouting wheat and certain tree leaves and the bright yellow of the daffs, just great to look at.
Boris was fun to ride with but his laughter & jokes dwindled as we rode on...not as used to the distance as Dave & I but next week maybe he'll laugh last or at least loudest and/or for longer!

A six pack set off from the Ice Center with our new rider Nikki all the way from Oz also in the group were Oliver, Paul, John, Dave & I. We made it to Theydon Bois before forming into three pairs to suit. Nikki & Oliver kept it short with a stop at the High Beach cafe, Paul & John bolted over the hill not to be seen again, whilst myself & Dave headed for Maldon in Essex. We found old boats with rigging being repaired and an atmospheric & charming small market town on the Blackwater & Chelmer river estuary famous for it's salt. It was worth the visit and we'll be back.

For Stuart, Matt & I, today was about checking out the 'Round Chelmsford 08' route and ironing out one or two points of navigation still unclear. Dave & John were short on time and could not continue with us all the way around.
We found a fine tea house conveniently placed at the half way point in Danbury just past the courses biggest climb at Little Badow. 'Tea on the Green' did the trick and on we went through the Hanning Fields and on to Stock, Ingatstone, Kelvedon Hatch, Stapleford Abbotts, Chigwell Row & home. Stuart won the sprint for every village sign after Mountnessing where I asked if he was bringing his faster machine next week...something to do with a misunderstanding about insulting his donkey i guess! So now I know how to make Stuart go fast...hehe
The final route for 'Round Chelmsford 08' will be posted ahead of the event in two weeks time.

THE 6TH ROUND CHELMSFORD

THE 6TH ROUND CHELMSFORD
 - Our annual guided 160km ride round the lanes of Essex will take place on this Sunday the 5th May 2013.
A great leg stretcher for those who want to put the miles in -  we meet at the Lea Valley Ice Rink after 8am and leave at 8.30am and the ride settles in to groups of differing speed once we pass High Beech, meeting up for lunch at the White Swan in Bicknacre. Route sheets are handed out on the day.

CCH 2nd annual 'Round Chelmsford'

A year's up since our first 'Round Chelmsford' epic chase or extended leisure ride (the choice is yours) and it's nearly time to ride again. Above you'll find the event details laid over our club colors and the Republican flag of the land of CCH.
More details will be added to this blogg shortly including a link to the on-line route map.

CCH Club run 30.03.08

CCH's 1st Round Chelmsford ride is on next Sunday and the day's main mission was to check that the course was in good working order. We were pleased to find that all 95m were clear to pass; no landslides, fallen trees, boulders or avalanches blocking the route, however it must have rained heavily the night before as there were quite a lot of fords and road rivers to navigate on the way.
A figure hugging figure skater came out of the Ice Centre to see of us off, she wished us "buon fortuna mon braves allez!" before going back to the ice to presumably twirl some more.
What a difference a week makes, the day's weather was changeable but fine.
CCH had a new rider today by the name of Ed on his new racing bike. He hadn't put any miles into his legs since November so it was a really fine showing to get all the way to Ingatestone before testing 'bale-out option two' by taking the train. It worked, although Ed reported that he had to ride to the next stop at Shenfield because of maintenance work. Well done Ed. A credit to John 'the bike' also who was the oldest of the group finishing the 95m np.
The passage to Danbury's 'Tea on The Green' cafe stop was eventful; Dave & John made a wrong turning at Mont Monge Tout (Toot Hill) and required telephone guidance to rejoin with Stu, Ed & Keir. On the other side of Pleshey Ed suffered a double puncture, John & Keir waited to help the repair then the trio formed a working group to chase after Dave & Stu - we found them eating snacks in Little Waltham. Dave won the sprint for Bobbingworth, Keir won at High Easter & Pleshey so takes the green jersey from Dave.
They say you know it when you get to Little Baddow by bike. North Hill is not a cake to eat, and you feel like your body's in a drama half way up and in a trauma by the top.

At Danbury's T' On the Green we dropped off the special 'items of wonder' to be collected by the riders doing the 1^st CCH Round Chelmsford next week.

'Round Chelmsford' Ride - 6th April 2008

The Round Chelmsford is our inaugural club ride.

Its a sociable, non-competitive ride that any regular rider should be able to achieve, the distance is around 90 miles; there are some hills!

Lead group cyclists head down the road towards the big climb of the day, Little Baddow's North Hill. CCH rider Clem Berrill (pictured in front here) will be back this coming Sunday to take part in the Lea Valley CC road race when North Hill will be climbed eight times but at race pace.

CCH NEEDS YOUR HELP

Important message to all members and friends of CCH - your help is needed for our innaugral road race at Bulmer near Sudbury on the 21st of May. The race starts at 2.30pm but we will be out there from early morning assessing the course and laying on a breakfast for the villagers of Bulmer. CCH juniors will be doing some exhibition racing on the village green and then there may be time to ride the 13.6 mile course before the race starts. We have any number of jobs that need filling by club members - from line judges and marshalls to catering and driving. Please let us know if you can make it on the day as soon as possible. It is our intention to really put CCH on the map through a well run race that is well attended by the locals. Our riders Clem, Rhys, Alex and Ben in the Eastern Road Race League have already gained CCH a lot of notice through their fantastic efforts lets help them along by putting on the best show.

7th Ronde Chelmsford - the Essex Grand Boucle*

The 7th edition of CCH round Chelmsford ride last Sunday was well attended with around 40 riders turning up at the Ice Rink to tackle the 160km ride through Essex - this time anti clockwise. CCH stalwarts and newcomers were joined by our friends from Lea Valley Velo on a lovely sunny day and set off to ride along some of the route of this year's stage three of the Tour de France. The yellow marked sections of the tour route all came after lunch but with all the flowers in the hedge rows out and the rape seed in full bloom the whole route looked yellow. Going round the other way offered some new perspectives and -ahem - detours and we even managed to take in some ERRL racing action as the route coincided with some of the Iceni Velo race. The lunch stop at the Generals Arms at the top of back hill left us all well refreshed for the afternoon - recommended and thanks to Mike for sorting that one out.

2024 saw the beginning of a healthy association with Akaso cameras. Starting with light engagements and enough Akaso Brave 7 cameras to equip the lead coaches delivering CCH's year round cycling activities and two sporting members (Joel & Dani) who are doing entry level time trials, triathlons, running events. And Dani is making a splash (living the dream:) with her surfing hobby!  

This year's three main main sporting events are also set to be supported by Akaso

CCH Club run 17.02.08

It was superb last Sunday, a beautiful day out on the bike. We started out with six riders, picking up another on the way up Lea bridge road making a magnificent seven! Our route today was clockwise around Bishops Stortford. We stayed together until Albury near Much Hadham in Hertfordshire where Stuart & John turned back for home. The rest of us carried on and traveled across to Thaxted via the pretty village of Ugly, in the process we discovered the route we're most likely to use for another future CCH ride 'The Round Bishops Stortford' (see the route). Crucially we found a way to avoid Stanstead (Mordor-the land of shadow) airport by using the B1051 into Thaxted. This rolling road is handsome with great views from the rises, it was relatively traffic-free and when we reached the picturesque town with its spire & windmill we stopped here for some time travel, tea and bites in a Tudor age cafe. After this, we headed back by the shortest route via Great Dunmow, Leaden Roding and Epping. I think we covered about 160k in the end, arriving back just before dark. I felt it when I got in and the others did really well because they have not been out so much lately. However, they said to me that they'll be out again next Sunday if not before - Looking forward to seeing you all on the road again very soon. Next Sunday 24th February, if the weather is fine again, we are planning to reconnoiter the CCH's 1st 'Round Chelmsford' route which is to run on Sunday, April 6th 2008. This is another ride of about 90m. There are plenty of opportunities to turn back on this route but it is an interesting journey, you may not want to miss any of it. New riders wishing to join us on Sundays please feel welcome and do not be put off by the distance or speed. We have a range of abilities going out together and we are able to divide into groups that are comfortable for all to ride in. FYI Cycling Club Hackney is soon set to affiliate with British Cycling and will then be ready to start an official CCH membership process. Keir Apperley (CCH coach & secretary)

Cycling Club Hackney marquee

Hackney Council Leisure & Green Spaces have approved CC Hackney's design and most importantly the budget to enable the production of our first official marquee. 
Sports Development Coordinator Lynn Humphrey has seen to it that our club receives this asset in time for our summer programme of events; many thanks going out to Lynn and the department - yay from CC Hackney:)

Summer programme...In 2013 CCH will be delivering the following:

• An Inaugural Euro Track Cycle Race day; 01.06.13. This is the only track race that attracts both amateur riders from Europe and the UK to compete for honour, trophies and cash prizes at Herne Hill Velodrome.
• ERRL Road Race E1/2/3 July 2013 – under British Cycling rules, open to national elite riders.
• Hackney Grass Track League (HGTL) July/August 2013. This community sporting series aims to target people who are not yet involved in cycle sport. In previous years our HGTL has and attracted at least 250 local adult and youth participants.
• 6th Annual Round Chelmsford Sportive, May 2013. A popular guided 100-mile sportive ride for all comers.
• London Youth Games, July 2013. This is Europe's largest annual youth sporting occasion that is held in
• London. The London Youth Games offers competitive opportunities for Hackney's young racing cyclists (Individual time trials and circuit race)
• Go-Ride cyclo cross race on Hackney Downs – September 2013
