CCHackney Road Race 2018 report

Our winner - Toby Perry of Thanet RC
The 2018 running of the CCHackney Annual Road Race was held at Great Thurlow on Sunday the 23rd September 2018. This year it incorporated the Eastern and South East Regional Junior Championships which were due to be held in the afternoon. Low entry numbers brought about the merged field - however I'm sure there were plenty Juniors that would have preferred to have raced in the afternoon considering the conditions.

Wet doesn't do it justice really as Jon Hemming's excellent photos testify it was sodden (as was Jon after working so hard to get these photos.) Full Gallery here-Road Race 18.
Of course when the race finished the sun came out but at least it went ahead as it had been threatened with high winds all week which luckily died out before the race.

The turn at Wratting.
The race ran for eleven laps of the 7.9km Great Thurlow course totalling 87km - the cold and wet soon proved too much for some riders either that or they were sensible and decided to stop.  The riders were briefed that the five minute rule would apply and that any rider being pulled out by the judges or pulling themselves out at the finish line would be placed accordingly. Unfortunately as the car park and hq is at the bottom of the finish climb some riders never made it up there to get placed - who could blame them.

The race became a war of attrition then and with eight laps gone there were around 20 riders still in the race. Logan attacked off the front at Wratting and led up the finish hill as a group of four chased off the front of the bunch. they caught him at Withersfield as he sat up and that four pushed on.
The winning break.
The four of Milo Chapman, Thomas Heal,Toby Perry and Michael Auger quickly pushed their lead out to a minute
and didn't look like getting caught. with one lap to go Toby starting going off the front and stayed away to win quite convincingly followed by Michael then Milo. A total of 17 riders crossed the finish line.

Our Eastern region Junior championship podium - l-r - Joseph Bennett 2nd, Milo Chapman 1st and nets Ferguson 3rd

CCHackney Road Race 2018 results as per BC points.
The results and this report were a bit delayed as the races should have been merged online at BC Hq - this didn't happen so we now have two sets of results. Some bonus points then for riders not expecting them.

Susan Loveday
The race was dedicated to the memory of Susan Loveday who passed away this summer. Susan worked tirelessly for Thurlow sports club and was a great help to CCH in our previous events on this course - the  donations offered for refreshments in memory of Susan will go to Addenbrookes Charitable Trust Oncology Unit - £100 was raised.
CCHackney would like to thank the villagers of Great Thurlow, Withersfield and Great Wratting for their cooperation in this event taking place in their area. In particular we’d like to thank Allan Loveday from Thurlow Sports Club.
