The Cycling Club Hackney Road Race 2016 - part of the ERRL, comprised of four laps of the 13.1 mile Bulmer circuit in good conditions. Not content with laying on sunshine we also had a flypast by a Spitfire at the start of the race - other vehicle strangeness was to follow.

Report from inside the peloton -

Attempted breakaways tried to form immediately once the flag had dropped but proved difficult to create. It was not until Clem Berrill (CC Hackney) attacked over one of the Bulmer bumps that the group let its guard down. Clem quickly built up a lead of 15 seconds and was then joined by Nathan Howard (Finchley racing team) and Peter Kirwan (Cambridge CC), and although their lead went out to 25 seconds the bunch was not going to let this move go and the peleton was lined out on the approach to Kitchen Hill. It was a fast start to the race with the first lap completed at 42 kph with the three up breakaway setting the Strava course record.

On the second lap Ben Locke (Maldon & District CC) attacked at Mashey wood and rode solo off the front of the group for an impressive 7 km but no rider would join him. It was all back together for the cheese prime at the end of the second lap - sponsored by Hub Velo -  which was taken by Joshua Andrews (Fast Test Racing Team) followed by Andrew Harrison (Finchley Racing Team).

Near the end of the penultimate lap Christopher Hezelgrave (CC Hackney) attacked on the final Bulmer bump and built up a short lead but could not make the break stick. Not sure if this had something to do with two large wedding vehicles jumping into the race convoy. On the final lap Liam Gentry (VC Baracchi) attacked with Andrew Holmes (VC Revolution) but once again the bunch would not let the move go. Jack Hardwicke - who was nominated by his fellow riders as the most aggressive rider of the day- sponsored by London Field Cycles - then put in a strong solo attack that held the group off for a long time, but he was eventually caught. As the race neared its conclusion many riders tried to get off the front of the bunch but this proved difficult as everything was being chased down. Although Henry Farrell (Endeavour RT) was strong enough to get away on the Bulmer bumps he could not hold off the fast moving group.

The final well timed attack came from Joshua Aiken (Fast Test Racing Team) and Dougal Toms (Iceni Velo) and it looked for a while like they could hold off the group but it was all back together by the final corner. Joshua may have been caught but this no doubt helped his fellow Fast Test Racing teammate Joshua Andrews who was fifth wheel going into the final corner. Joshua who commented how difficult the finishing straight was to judge, “I didn’t want to go too early… it’s so hard to judge… it goes up and then everyone relaxes but really it’s a false flat all the way”, judged his sprint to perfection going for the line with 150 m to go, taking the victory with several bike lengths. Andrew Harrison took second making it the same top two as the prime lap and Junior rider Dougal Toms took the final place on the podium.

After three laps of the mens race the women taking part in the Essex Ladies Giro rolled onto the circuit for five laps in stage 1 of their race. This would mean a long day out for the CCH volunteers but luckily the threatened rain didn't start falling until the womens' race was run.

Stage one was won by Grace Garner - she went on to take the overall. 

The day went really well and wouldn't have happened without all the help from CCH volunteers and NEG, Accredited Marshals and Eastern BC.

CCH sponsored HASVC news - 'Use it or loose it...'

Calling all existing and would be young track riders of Hackney: Maintaining and keeping these sessions running is dependent on enough riders attending to cover the venue and block cycle hire costs. The coaches are volunteering, their fees waived for the cause. 

Over the last two weeks there has been a significant drop off in numbers, where the shortfall is being shouldered by CC Hackney.

CCHackney Primavera 3 Results and Photos

Action from Saturday's cat 4 race

The final event of this season's Primavera Circuit races took place yesterday 7th May 2016 at the Lea Valley Velopark circuit in glorious conditions for racing. The early start seemed to have caught many riders out but after a slight delay the races were under way with the youth DE first off for 4 laps.

Youth D race

The smaller fields for the D and E categories this year may reflect the new rule changes for Under 12s or maybe the sun pulled them in another direction - those that did race gave it their all with wins for Mia Rutherford  in the girls D for Iceni Velo, Henry Hobbs of Barking and Dagenham CC won the boys D and James Warrilow also Barking and Dagenham CC winning the boys E. 1st and 2nd in the youth C boys

The cat C under 12s race was next - taking place over 6 laps with girls giving it as good as the boys - once again Barking & Dagenham showed strongly with Leah Warrilow winning followed by Anoushka Minale of Cycling Club Hackney, Flo Peate from Bigfoot and Sienna Bhumbra also CCH.
For the C Boys Noah Hobbs of Barking & Dagenham took the win followed by team mate Caelan Miller, then Alfie Salmon of Lee Valley Youth. Full results here.

Youth B bunch

Winner youth A

This week the A and B races were run at the same time under strict orders not to come together. At one point the leading under 14 rider- Aran Martin broke off the front of his bunch and caught then passed the under 16s before they decided to put power down and force the race. In the end he took a well deserved win over the 45 minute race. A close sprint for the A boys went the way of Liam Hanks and Charlotte Mcgreevy won the B girls and Connie Hayes won the A's.

Austin up front in the Cat 4 race.

The 4th cat race was popular as usual with nearly seventy riders on the start line. The racing looked pretty fast in the heat and all was going well until the final lap when a pedal strike at the front of the bunch resulted in a pile up at the top of the hill next to the velodrome - just as everyone was cranking up their sprint efforts. Around ten riders came down with one rider looking at a broken collar bone - we wish a speedy recovery to them all. Those who missed the crash went on to the sprint with Rory McCarron from regents Park Rulers taking the win. Top ten -

There was a smaller field for the women's and senior men's race this week - I'm guessing that the higher category riders  don't like mornings? Abi Van Twist and Alicia Speake broke away from the others with Elizabeth Hughes winning the sprint for third from Sarah Knight.

Barnabas Purbrook takes the win in the 123 race

The men's 1 2 3 race was fast paced but mainly stayed together as bunch eventually Barnabas Purbrook - London Dynamo and Arlen Vartazarian - Regents Park Rouleurs broke away and stayed away for half the race with Purbrook ending out a 20 second gap on Vartazarian in the end to come first.Meanwhile another last lap crash occurred in the following bunch as they went up the hill next to the velodrome. The tightness of the circuit calls for riders to stay fully concentrated the whole time - similar in the way riders need to stay switched on inside the velodrome - however that's easier said than done when jockeying for position in a sprint finish. here's hoping for a speedy recovery to the riders who sustained injuries in this race.

Circuit racing is fast, exciting and can be dangerous but over the three Primavera events the racing was in the main of a safe and good standard and we'd like to thank all the riders who took part and for all your fantastic feed back and we hope to see you again at our next one there on the 10th of September.
