Alex & Tao on fire

Alex Peters and Tao Geoghegan Hart set alight the British National Road Race Championships. Wow our boys made the race - I saw it live with my eys,. The way they rode was incredible a top class double act doing the bizzo and taking it to the best riders in Britain. Tao (Mr T) is now the 2016 National Under 23 British Champion. It was a race within a race; Team Tinkov's Adam Blythe won the Elite title. A great event to watch, the real deal.

Alex has been renamed Durracell Bunny Peters by Cycle Sport mag and awarded him man of the match for his efforts out front all day.

2016 London Youth Games news

Just one point in it in the end, that's an ouch! We came 2nd overall and did not retain our cup despite having two outright individual winners in Frank Moore and Anoushka Minale. I must say very well done to these two athletes and every rider who gave their very best. Also to all of the supporting staff and parents, especially those that got ready properly, (tapered, focused and rested) in the important week leading up to this, our primary target, team event.

Congratulations going to Southwark who were announced as this year's road cycling winners, well done to their team and manager Bill Wright.

Next time Hackney will try to win again and get it just right in 2017 OK TEAM!?

London Youth Games 2016 - good luck to both teams

Today Cycling Club Hackney say 'bon courage' to Hackney's cycling squads and the teams taking part in the 2016 Balfour Beatty London Youth Games cycling finals this weekend; that's the road event on Sunday and the BMX races on Sunday, both held at Lee Valley Velopark.

Hackney BMX & Road teams are the 2015 reigning champions who are looking to hold onto their titles and so confirm Hackney Borough's reputation as a genuine hotbed for cycling.

Finsbury Park Festival of Cycling – 12th June 2016
Cycling Club Hackney Go-Ride Grass Track Racing

In spite of some truly awful weather in the morning there was a good turnout for the grass track racing at the Finsbury Park Festival of Cycling on Sunday. Well over 50 riders raced, many for the first time.
The space available at Finsbury Park provided a surprisingly technical course for a grass track - tight turns, sloping straights and a bumpy back straight. This combined with a course that started wet from the heavy rain and was dried through the day by a brisk north-westerly wind, all made the flying lap and group races a challenging prospect. This wasn’t a day for slick tyres or track bikes - as one rider found to his cost crashing half way through his flying lap. Riders on knobbly-tyred cyclo-cross or mountain bikes were at a distinct advantage.
The main focus was on a flying lap competition, which was keenly contested, especially in the under 8 and under 12 age groups.
Some real grit was shown by the under 8s with riders as young as 4 and 5 doing their flying laps in the wind and rain, but the older riders in the group, Nico Coté (M) and Ella Shaw (F), took the Go Ride honours.
In the under 12 flying lap, Cycling Club Hackney riders Robin Steer (M) and Anoushka Minale (F) set the fastest times with Eva Shard (F) and Louis Davis (M) winning the Go-Ride category. Anoushka also managed to set the slowest time in this category riding a ski bike borrowed from another festival stall. A borrowed tandem also allowed for a brief tandem flying lap competition dominated by Anoushka.
Rudy Warren in the under 16s set the second fastest lap of the day on a slick-tyred road bike which was only beaten at the end of the day by Ben Shaw, who took advantage of a dried-out track and knobbly tyres.
Start to handicap scratch race – with a strong wind blowing across the track
As well as the flying laps, group races were run including scratch and handicap sprints. The flying lap times were used to set up a series of handicap sprints allowing riders in different age categories to race against one another. The faster riders were started further back and with the right handicap all riders should cross the line closely together making for exciting finishes to races.
So what looked like it might be a washout turned into a good day’s racing enjoyed by (nearly) all the riders. If you enjoyed it and want more have a look at the Cycling Club Hackney website for details of our Saturday morning child and youth training sessions run from the Club HQ on the Nightingale Estate just off Hackney Downs. If you go to school in Hackney there’s also the Young Hackney Primary School Cycling League to get involved in through your school with the final event coming up in July.
