Young volunteers apply themselves - Youth Oportunities Fund

Fawcett and Concorde bike club regulars Ahmed, Hasbi and Nihatcan have come together to work on Young Hackney's (Hackney Council) Youth Opportunities Fund (YOF) They are looking to win local government grant aid in order to carry out much needed repairs and servicing on all of CC Hackney's community loan bikes. These are stored in several locations around the borough and used regularly by young residents and school children who'd otherwise not get to ride good cycles with qualified coaches.
Interlinkx CIC and CC Hackney staff wish this project well and are hoping for the best with their application.

Schools Streets Hackney 2018

New trial for selected schools - Hackney Council in 2018:

"School streets is a pilot scheme where the road outside a number of schools is closed to traffic at the schools' opening and closing times. Closing the street to school traffic and through traffic helps to make a safer, more pleasant environment for everyone while ensuring residents, businesses, pedestrians and cyclists can still use the road."

Basquiat's work on show; riders head to the Barbican - Boom for Real!

Basquiat & Banksy out side for free.
CC Hackney riders from Elsdale and Concorde bases cycled to the Barbican Centre London EC2 to see the Art show of Jean-Michel Basquiat's work under the title 'Boom for Real!'
During time inside the gallery members took part in a fun competition to encourage expression and creativity while looking for designs and ideas to take forward to make some CCH T-shirts with.
Thanks and appreciation must go to Hackney Council & Young Hackney for supporting this activity and to The Barbican for their pricing policy that allows U14s to enter free.

Most in the group were surprised and impressed by the impulsive and striking style of Basquiat's work, they enjoyed his art and found the works relevant and interesting. They also noted in his 'canvases' that for Basquiat, not being able to afford conventional art materials was no barrier for him; having opted to use scrap objects like fridges and doors to paint and write on.

There were two film areas, one that was showing a rare interview with two of Basquet's friends talking with him about his life and influences and the other a full length feature film about the man and his life in New York in the early 1980's called Downtown 81 - Trailer.

Neil, Simon & Omarie getting the group ready.
And some thought parking our bikes under ground was a highlight:)
Riding to and from the exhibition during half term was a useful exercise because the roads were quieter than usual and our young cyclists had a chance to practice their safe, urban cycling skills. They saw more of London and learned some routes out of Hackney into the city for future reference. This type of experience is to be continued; where cultural events are visited by bike. Another good result for CC Hackney and our partners.

Calling young creatives on wheels - T-shirt designing competition

We have set up a cycling trip to the Barbican Centre to see the art show; 'Basquiet: Boom for Real'  This follows the success of our cultural visit by bike to Shakespeare's Globe Theatre to see a performance of The Taming of the Shrew.
Like last time two groups will be leaving from our Concorde & Elsdale bases to meet at the Barbican Centre.
At the exhibition participants are to take part in our T-shirt designing competition creating designs for all or any one of our cycling bases; Concorde, Elsdale, Fawcet and Pearson Street. Sketching materials will be supplied. We anticipate that the works of Basquiat will be inspirational and fire up our riders’ imaginations!
For a consent form and more about this visit please contact either Keir or Neil:
